DT have had an incredible year with lots of practical work being produced, trips attended all over the south east and competitions entered and won at both local and national level.
We had 6 outstanding year 8 students who came runner up in the National IET engineering challenge, where they came in the top 30 out of 6000 students. These students were Isabella, Jack, William, Athena, Emma and Lauren, all from year 8. Not only did these pupils enjoy an engineering day competing at a local level against 3 other schools but they also went on to enjoy a residential trip to Thorpe Park where they spent a day on the rides, an overnight stay in the hotel and a following day competing against the top 5 schools in the UK.
To add to this – these students made it through to the Jack Petchey Final at the Savoy Hotel London. Here they won best product design.
As well as the IET competition we also had 7 students enter the KM Brightsparks competition, and these students went on to win the BAE Systems prize for their design of a mobility aid for the blind. These students were Oscar, Jonathon, Kayleigh, Andre, Oliver, Frank and Ben. These students have won a trip to the Rochester flight simulation centre. They worked on their project every week for a whole year, and their dedication and creativity has certainly paid off, well done to all of them.
The year 9 students in the DT department benefitted from the fallen Birch tree in the car park this Easter, and they have had a wonderful 10 weeks learning how to carve and have all made their own personal green woodworking spoons and spatulas.
